Making Films Accurate

With this year's Oscars imminent, Tom Holland and I meet the cineasts who help us understand history and the history of cinema.

Hannah Grieg, historical consultant on the Oscar-winning film The Favourite, and the screenwriter of Churchill, Alex von Tunzelmann, discuss the portrayal of history on the big screen.

This item was made PICK OF THE WEEK - which is a Radio 4 nerd’s dream. The last time a package I was involved in was made pick of the week it was about jiu jitsu suffragettes - which I later went on to write The Unstoppable Letty Pegg about.

Meanwhile, Tom meets Kevin Brownlow, whose work finding and restoring film from the silent era earned him an Oscar in 2010.

And Matthew Sweet tells the story of Vic Kinson, a bookkeeper from Derbyshire, who created the IMDB of his day. It was rather wonderful: the index cards were personally made - sometimes even using his old birthday and christmas cards.

I do hope you’re liking the series. You can listen on BBC Sounds and provide feedback by following this link .If you have a moment, that would be excellent of you. I’m dead proud to be part of it!
