Lisbon historically is immense. It changed the world. The Portuguese started their colonial empire from here as early as the 15th century and the city is laced with monuments and buildings heralding from this time, at least the ones that survived the massive earthquake there in 1755. It was possibly my delight in discussing colonialism and natural disasters that made Catherine understandably wary of me. I just love history… and geology. Honest.
