Your Place Or Mine - Episode Nine - Tatty Mcleod

Bonjour!

This week we are off to France with the bilingual comic mind of comedian and tiktok star Tatty Macleod!

Not just any part of France but Brittany, at the centre of the most significant collection of neolithic menhirs and standing stones… not to mention tumulus (artificial hills used for burials, like a millenium before the first pyramid).

I get quite impassioned about extremely old rocks. Funnily enough neither Shaun or Tatty knew much about neolithic stones and so I got to witter happily.

To add to my excitement we were in Melvyn Bragg’s Studio! Ok, just a different studio where they record In Our Time. We all attempted the voice. Shaun won.

Because we only recorded on Monday I haven’t had a chance to listen to the show so don’t know how much of my ranting made the cut (and singing - they gave us the local cider - oh dear).

Just know the Carnac Stones are AWESOME. And my personal opinion is that large stone assemblages (you can tell I’m no expert) come about when you first get serious agriculture. You need ways of knowing the time (annually) AND make something awesome to inspire/show your status. You need to know when to sow and harvest to survive. Stones operated as part of this religion/science (same thing). Then when you get metal work in the bronze age you can make smaller, portable magical objects like sun discs to do the calculation - and still make you look like an amazing powerful wizard that people will give stuff to.
